A Racial Prompt - Linzie Truong

Updated: Feb 1, 2021

It's important to understand that despite how far we've come as a country there's always underlying stigma and internalized hatred when it comes to racism and coming to terms with it.

As an Asian American I've been taught at an early age that I am sadly recognized to some by the stereotypes that surround my background rather what I have to offer. And to most, this situation at an early age is applicable. I'm not going to pretend like racism isn't rampant in North Andover. I used to be followed into the middle school library and had racist slurs said to me as I studied or read. I elementary school kids would pull back their eyes and say that they were Chinese when in reality our eyes were pretty much the same size and shape. I think most folxs would like to put themselves on a pedestal when it comes to this type of thing and say that they're not racist. Because firstly we are cowards and don't look inwardly enough and secondly, no one wants to be the bad guy ever.

Even when campaigning for a democrat in North Andover, it's already well known that this town is filled with conservative blue collared folxs. The incorporation of RAISE as a means to satisfy the need for a more diverse learning environment was excellent but the at home enforcement of it also needs to be considered. To teach your family and friends that not being racist isn't just for you to be in your best behavior, that should be your behavior. At all times, no exceptions.

Jokes made about one's culture isn't to be taken lightly either. Making fun of someone's hair, their way of dress, their accent. Extremely rude and if there is a racist motive behind it, be mindful. I've grown up in this community and I know that as students, teachers, and parents we can do better. Do better as to teach those around us that this type of behavior is unacceptable. Be the bigger person and step up to those who take offensive jokes lightly. Because to some it might be light, however for others words instill more pain than anything else. Bruises will fade but words won't. They corrode at one's mind and mental state. Culture is something that one cannot change and by your disrespectful comments, they'll unconsciously be trying to adhere to your standards instead of appreciating and loving what the have.

Let's do better with recognizing racial narratives. check out the NAHS Black Students Union Club, Asian Pacific Islander Club, and Race Amity Club, that provides awesome discussions on these matters.
